A former CVS employee accused of defrauding customers to “shop and pay her bills” remains behind bars, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

DeAundra Smith, 25, was arrested Jan. 24 on multiple charges including fraud and financial transaction card theft, the bureau said in a Feb. 13 news release.

In all, she faces 125 charges:

  • Computer trespass (19 counts)
  • Identity theft (38 counts)
  • Financial transaction card theft (18 counts)
  • Financial transaction card fraud (50 counts)

State agents began investigating Smith on Jan. 16 at the request of the Tifton Police Department, according to the release. Authorities learned she had used her work computer to steal personal information from customers, “including elderly victims,” investigators said.

Many of the victims didn’t realize they were being defrauded, the GBI said.

Marko Jones, an assistant special agent in charge with the GBI, said Smith was employed at a CVS in Tifton at the time but didn’t not specify her role. It’s also unclear how much money was stolen.

“We don’t have a final amount as the investigation is still ongoing,” Jones told McClatchy News.

Smith remained in custody at the Tift County Jail as of Feb. 14, online records show. Authorities said she faces additional pending charges in Dougherty and Crisp counties.

“This case underlines the negative impact that these serious crimes can have and the importance of regularly checking bank statements and safeguarding personal information,” the GBI said.

Tifton is about a 100-mile drive south from Macon.
