A Wisconsin woman used her toddler as a human shield while charging at police officers during a traffic stop, authorities said.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Jan. 30, Glendale police officers spotted a car that had been reported stolen from an Enterprise and initiated a “high risk” stop, according to a probable cause affidavit.

For nearly 10 minutes, the 29-year-old woman refused to cooperate with police orders to exit the car, authorities said.

After eventually getting out, the woman ran back to the car, got inside and stayed there for another nine minutes reaching around for something in the back seat, police said.

Police deployed pepper balls into the car to force the woman out, and she emerged using her 1-year-old child “as a human shield” as she charged at the officers, records show.

An 11-year-old child was also in the vehicle, authorities said.

During a search of the vehicle, police found an unsecured pistol in a diaper bag within reach of the children, records show.

The woman was charged Feb. 3 with obstructing an officer and two counts of child neglect, according to court records.

Glendale is about a 10-mile drive north from Milwaukee.
