77-year-old vanishes searching for dog he took for a walk, CA cops say. Body found
A man who went missing while searching for his dog has been found dead, California deputies say.
Steven Sherwood, 77, told family he was walking his dog in Garland Ranch Regional Park at about 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, when he lost his pet, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
The Carmel Valley man started scouring the area for his dog and last spoke with family at about 10:30 a.m., deputies said.
About 30 minutes later, hikers found Sherwood’s dog and brought it to its home, deputies said.
Sherwood’s family called deputies at about 12 p.m. to report him missing, according to deputies.
The park’s rangers began to search for Sherwood and were later joined by multiple agencies, including the sheriff’s office and its search and rescue team.
Rescuers ultimately found Sherwood’s body in the Carmel River, deputies said.
Using a swift-water rescue, deputies said its search team and fire officials recovered Sherwood’s body.
Garland Ranch Regional Park is in Carmel Valley, about an 80-mile drive south from San Jose.
