A Virginia father is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the 2017 disappearance of his 8-month-old daughter and her mother, authorities said.

Carlos Johnson Jr., 46, was arrested at about 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 — nearly eight years after 34-year-old Keir Johnson and her daughter Chloe were last seen, the Newport News Police Department said in a Feb. 17 news release.

Officials said in a news conference streamed by WVEC that Carlos Johnson is Chloe’s father.

“This day has been a long time coming, especially for the family of Keir and Chloe,” Newport News Chief of Police Steve Drew said in the release. “While we recognize that this arrest cannot bring Keir and Chloe back, we sincerely hope it provides a sense of justice for their loved ones.”

Keir Johnson and Chloe were reported missing in 2017 after the two didn’t show up for plans with friends in April, WVEC reported.

Soon after, on May 14, Johnson’s vehicle was discovered in Newport News, according to police.

“Imagine living in a world and there’s no more trees and grass,” Teir Johnson, Keir’s twin sister, told WVEC in April 2024. “All I know is her.”

Although the bodies of the mother and daughter have not been found, authorities do not believe the two are alive. The investigation is ongoing.

Johnson is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing June 26, WVEC reported.
