A 14-year-old girl died after being stabbed at her Texas middle school, authorities said.

The stabbing happened around 11:20 a.m. Monday, March 10, at Roy J. Middle School in Killeen, police said in a news briefing streamed by KCEN and posted on YouTube.

Two 14-year-old girls were involved in a “dispute,” leading to one student stabbing the other, according to the Killeen Police Department.

The victim was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead about an hour later, police said.

Officers said the accused suspect was arrested at the scene. The identities of the girls have not been publicly released.

The school was temporarily placed on a lockdown after the stabbing, and some parents waited hours to pick up their children, the Killeen Daily Herald reported.

“To allow time for healing,” classes will not be in session for the remainder of the week at the school, which has its spring break the following week, according to a Facebook post from the school district.

“Our hearts are heavy as we navigate this difficult time together,” Killeen Independent School District Superintendent Jo Ann Fey said in a statement. “We know this tragedy has deeply affected our school community, and we want to ensure that our students, staff, and families have the space and support needed to grieve and begin to recover.”

Police said a homicide investigation is underway.

Killeen is about a 70-mile drive north from Austin.
