Child tests positive for fentanyl after pills found at child care center, CA cops say
At least one child tested positive for fentanyl after California deputies say a worker found pills at a child care center.
La Petite Academy staff called San Bernardino County deputies Tuesday, March 18, when they found “unknown blue pills” inside a classroom, the sheriff’s department said in a March 20 news release.
When a deputy arrived at the Victorville child care center, they noted the blue pills, which had “M30” imprinted on them, as potentially counterfeit pills that may have fentanyl, deputies said.
The center’s staff looked through video surveillance and “identified three children who appeared to have ingested the pills,” deputies said.
All three were treated at nearby hospitals and at least one tested positive for fentanyl, according to deputies.
Two of the child care center’s staff members were also taken to a hospital for treatment, deputies said.
Members of the department’s gang/narcotic divisions overdose response team took up the investigation Wednesday, March 19, and spoke with both staff and parents, deputies said.
“The safety of our families and staff is our highest priority,” a La Petite Academy spokesperson said in an emailed statement to McClatchy News. “We have no additional information at this time and are continuing to focus on the care of the children.”
The academy, which offers care for infants to children 10 years of age, is working with law enforcement to determine where the pills came from, deputies said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact deputies at 909-387-8400.
Victorville is about an 80-mile drive northeast from Los Angeles.
