$200K ‘stockpile’ of missing packages found at UPS worker’s home, Texas officials say

A UPS worker was arrested after investigators found a large “stockpile” of stolen packages at his Texas home, officials say.

The 37-year-old employee was arrested March 24 in an ongoing investigation by the FBI, Homeland Security, UPS Security, and the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office, prosecutor Luis Saenz said in a March 26 news release.

The “high-value theft scheme” first came to the attention of authorities after UPS Security noticed packages going missing at its distribution facility in Brownsville, Saenz said.

“Investigators successfully tracked stolen devices to (the employee’s) residence in San Benito, Texas, leading law enforcement to obtain and execute a search warrant,” the release said.

Inside the man’s home, authorities discovered boxes and boxes of luxury goods and electronics, designer shoes and handbags by Dior and Louis Vuitton, jewelry and power tools, photos show. In all, investigators estimate the value of the stolen items at $200,000.

The worker was home during the search and was taken into custody and jailed on theft charges, according to the prosecutor.

The man had been employed by UPS for five years, officials say, though it’s unclear when he began stealing deliveries. Also unclear is how many people were victims of the package theft scheme.

“This was a deliberate and organized effort to steal high-value merchandise meant for paying customers. Crimes like this not only hurt businesses but also shake consumer confidence,” Saenz said, adding that “Cameron County will not tolerate theft at any level.”

The employee did not work alone in the scheme, officials said, as the investigation is ongoing “with additional suspects and charges expected.”

Brownsville is a 275-mile drive southeast from San Antonio.
