Active duty soldier accused of shooting man dead in apartment, Alaska cops say
An active duty soldier was arrested and charged after being accused of fatally shooting a man, Alaska officials said.
On April 11, Fairbanks Police officers responded to an apartment and found Joseph Casas, 37, with a gunshot wound to the head, officials said.
He was sent to the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead, officers said.
After learning of previous incidents at the apartment, officials began looking for 24-year-old Adayus Robertson, an active duty soldier stationed at Fort Wainwright who knew Casas, officials said.
Robertson was wearing an ankle monitor related to two previous court cases where he faced assault and escape charges, officials said.
GPS data taken from his ankle monitor revealed he’d been at the scene of the shooting before walking away afterward, officers said.
When officers found him about a mile away at a skating rink, he had a handgun magazine in his possession, Fairbanks police said. A firearm was later found in a dumpster near the apartment.
Officials didn’t specify what led to the shooting or how Roberston knew Casas.
Robertson was arrested and charged with murder, tampering with evidence, and violating conditions of a release, officials said.
Anyone with information is asked to call 907-450-6500, officers said.
