A school employee was fired when district officials learned she had stolen money from a fundraiser meant for a family in need, Missouri deputies said.

Now, Amy Borghesi is charged with stealing cash from school fundraisers throughout her two-year employment as an administrative assistant at Murphy Elementary School, according to school officials and court documents filed on April 15.

Borghesi was running fundraisers for the school when she would put the money donated in her bag and take it home, according to deputies. Prosecutors say she did this during fundraisers from December 2023 through February 2025.

“We are aware that a former employee has been charged in connection with the theft of funds from school fundraisers during their period of employment with the district,” Northwest School District said in a statement to McClatchy News. “Once concerns were brought to our attention, we conducted an internal audit and fully cooperated with law enforcement throughout their investigation.”

When confronted by the school district about missing money from one fundraiser, Borghesi returned the money believed to have been stolen, the probable cause statement said.

She was fired, deputies said, then the school conducted an audit.

The audit determined approximately $12,600 was stolen or missing from multiple fundraisers during the Borghesi’s employment, the probable cause statement said.

The woman told investigators she spent the money on groceries and other household items, according to the probable causes statement.

A court summons was issued. She is scheduled to appear in court on June 23.

House Springs is about a 30-mile drive southwest from St. Louis.
