Woman and 12-year-old dead after cars swept off road by flood, Oklahoma cops say
A “historical” flooding event took the lives of a woman and 12-year-old boy in Oklahoma, police say.
Rescue crews responded to southeast Moore — a suburb of Oklahoma City — after two vehicles were caught in flood waters at about 9 p.m. Saturday, April 19, the Moore Police Department said in a news release the next day.
The powerful current swept one of the vehicles under a nearby bridge, police said.
Authorities say another vehicle, a pickup truck with a father and son inside, was also involved, KFOR reported.
Somehow, the truck got stuck on top of the car, which had three people inside, including a woman and 12-year-old boy, police told KOCO. They are believed to have been a family.
One person was rescued from the car, the station reported, but the other two were seemingly carried away by the water.
“It is with great sadness that we report that two individuals, an adult female and a 12-year-old male, were later located deceased,” police said in the release.
Extreme weather is nothing new in Oklahoma, but the storms and flooding were more intense than usual, officials said.
“This was a historical weather event that impacted roads and resulted in dozens of high-water incidents across the city. The Moore Police Department would like to extend a thank you to our neighboring agencies who assisted in rescue efforts,” the department said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victims.”
Moore is a roughly 10-mile drive south from Oklahoma City.
