18-year-old’s body found along river leads to arrest 40 years later, ME cops say
An 18-year-old was hanging out with friends when she went missing in 1984, Maine officials said.
Now, 41 years after her disappearance and the discovery of her body along the shoreline of a river, an arrest has been made, according to a May 1 Facebook post by Maine State Police.
Linda Maxwell was last seen in the Calais area on Aug. 23, 1984, and two days later her body was found along the shore of the St. Croix River in Robbinston about a 10-mile drive southeast, officials said.
Although officials worked on the case thoroughly, it eventually went cold, officials said.
Through a renewed and expanded investigation, officials charged 65-year-old Raymond Brown of Bangor, with murder, officials said. State police did not release more details about how investigators connected Brown to the case all these years later.
The man, who would’ve been in his mid-20s at the time of Maxwell’s killing, was taken into custody after a traffic stop and will be sent to the Washington County Jail as of May 1, officials said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Maine State Police, officials said.
Calais is in northeastern Maine on the border with New Brunswick, Canada, about a 170-mile drive northeast of Augusta.
