77-year-old tourist dies after fall at popular Utah national park, rangers say
A 77-year-old tourist died after falling at a popular national park in Utah, officials said.
Park rangers responded Tuesday, May 6, at Arches National Park, the National Park Service said in a news release.
Rudolf Peters was visiting from Haltern am See, Germany, when he fell on the Windows Loop Trail, officials said.
Witnesses started CPR on Peters before rangers got there, officials said.
First responders also tried life-saving measures on him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
The investigation is ongoing.
“Visitors are reminded that uneven surfaces, changeable weather, and preexisting health conditions are all important factors to consider when choosing a safe and enjoyable hike,” park officials said.
Arches National Park is known for its colorful stone arches, pinnacles and balanced rocks.
Windows Loop Trail is about 1.2 miles round trip near Moab, according to AllTrails.
The 30-minute hike takes visitors to views of a freestanding arch.
