A woman’s ex-boyfriend was shot and killed after police said he broke into her Texas home with an accomplice, news outlets report.

The deadly break-in happened at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, the Houston Police Department told KPRC.

Police said the woman and her new boyfriend realized someone was trying to force their way inside the house, so he told her to hide in a closet while he went to check it out, the outlet reported.

The woman called 911 while she hid in the closet, police told KHOU. As she was on the phone, two men kicked open the front door and her boyfriend opened fire, according to police.

One of the men, later identified as the woman’s ex, died at the scene, while the other fled in a Jeep, police told the station.

A short time later, police said an officer on patrol spotted the Jeep, spurring a high-speed chase that at one point reached 100 mph, KTRK reported.

The pursuit ended when the driver went off road into a bayou and was arrested, police told the station.
