A 29-year-old middle school teacher and dance coach is accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old student multiple times on school grounds, Michigan police said.

Vincent Weaver was on suspension from George Washington Carver Academy earlier in the month due to an unrelated matter when a student told their parents about the accused sexual misconduct on May 15, James McMahon, interim chief of Highland Park police, said in a news conference posted by WXYZ.

Weaver was suspended from his teaching and coaching position on May 2 because a sex toy fell out of his bag in a classroom, McMahon said. Due to this suspension, he was advised not to attend an off-site dance performance on May 16, but police said they had reason to believe he would try and attend.

“He was very passionate about this event,” McMahon said. “He put a lot of work into the event, and he was disappointed that he was advised he couldn’t attend.”

Disguised as an older woman and wearing a surgical mask, Weaver caught the attention of school security who noticed the “suspicious” individual “limping” into the event and contacted police, according to McMahon.

Weaver was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and indecent exposure, police said. He is held in jail on a $250,000 bond, according to McMahon.

“George Washington Carver Academy was recently made aware of an incident involving a teacher and student,” the school said in a May 19 statement. “We immediately notified law enforcement, placed the employee on suspension, and after an internal investigation, terminated their employment and removed them from campus.”

Weaver has been employed at the school since 2023, according to police.

McMahon said multiple instances of sexual misconduct occurred over a four-month period prior to May 2.

Highland Park is about a 10-mile drive northwest from downtown Detroit.
