Survivors hid as 77-year-old shot four people inside Indiana home, cops say
A 77-year-old man killed three people inside an Indiana home, then called 911 to say he had done it, authorities say, according to news outlets.
Deputies responded to a call at 8:31 p.m. Thursday, May 29, about a shooting at a house in Haubstadt, the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
A witness met first responders at the front door, the sheriff’s office said. Inside, deputies found three dead and a fourth person “who was critically injured.”
They also arrested the accused shooter, Patrick John Waite, on a charge of murder, according to the sheriff’s office.
No attorney information was available for Waite.
Two women and a man were killed, apparently shot in different rooms, the Evansville Courier & Press reported, citing court documents.
A woman was found dead in the kitchen, a man in the living room, and a second woman “was located upon a medical bed in the living room,” a sheriff’s office official told the outlet.
Four survivors who appeared to be uninjured were inside the home when authorities arrived, the sheriff’s office said.
According to investigators, they were hiding in an upstairs bedroom, WEVV reported. One of the people who was hiding was a juvenile, who deputies say witnessed Waite fatally shoot a woman in the head in the kitchen, the station reported.
At some point, deputies say Waite dialed 911, told the dispatcher he had shot people inside the house and would be waiting for law enforcement to show up, the station reported.
Officials have not publicly shared the identities of anyone involved except for Waite.
An investigation is underway.
Haubstadt is a roughly 160-mile drive southwest from Indianapolis.
