Stranded 74-year-old hikes to cell service after SUV slides off mountain road
A 74-year-old man and his two dogs became stranded when the SUV he was driving slid off the roadway in Arizona’s mountains, officials said.
There was no cell service in the area of Flag Mine Road in the Hualapai Mountains, so he hiked for about a mile until he reached reception to call for help, Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue said in a June 12 post on Facebook.
Officials didn’t provide information about what led to the Ford Bronco slipping off the road. It was early in the afternoon, and luckily “he had plenty of water, just needed a ride back to safety,” officials said.
He managed to contact rescuers as well as friends, who jumped into action to come help him, officials said.
Rescuers located him on the road and took him and his dogs to his friends who were on their way to help.
Photos show the Bronco tipped sideways into a ditch at the edge of the dirt road. A photo also shows the man with his dogs, which appear to be golden retrievers.
“Great job by everyone!” rescuers said.
The Hualapai Mountains are about a 200-mile drive west from Flagstaff.
