Man on probation stalked ex and made ‘chilling threats’ in Colorado, officials say
A 33-year-old man accused of sneaking a GPS tracker into his ex-wife’s car and making “chilling threats” is facing as many as eight years behind bars, Colorado officials said.
Taylor Warford, from Denver, was convicted July 9 of felony stalking and violating an order of protection following a jury trial, the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
He’s scheduled for sentencing in September, prosecutors said.
McClatchy News reached out to his attorney July 10 and was awaiting a response.
Warford targeted his ex “while he was on probation for domestic violence against her in Jefferson County,” prosecutors said.
She’d split from him and moved to Castle Rock in nearby Douglas County, according to prosecutors.
“Despite a no-contact order, Warford’s behavior escalated,” prosecutors said.
The ex-wife found a tracker in her car, according to prosecutors, and Warford’s family reported that he bought a butane torch and handcuffs online and “reportedly told them he planned to ‘wipe out’” the ex and her child.
In the release, Senior Deputy District Attorney Nate Marsh praised the woman for coming forward, saying, “this conviction ensures Warford will no longer be able to harm her.”
District Attorney George Brauchler added in the release that “this case highlights a number of weaknesses in our criminal justice system, including the risk created for the public by placing violence-threatening defendants on probation and sending them back into our community.”
He also shared “a word to would-be domestic violence abusers,” which was, “she is over you. Move on. It is less costly than losing years of liberty.”
Castle Rock is about a 30-mile drive southeast from Denver.
