Lifeguards rushed to assist a baby dolphin found stranded on a Southern California beach, officials reported.

The young cetacean was found on Torrance Beach on Tuesday, July 22, the Los Angeles County Fire Department Lifeguard Division said in a news release.

Lifeguards stabilized the dolphin and kept it hydrated until the Marine Mammal Care Center took over, officials said. No information was available on the dolphin’s condition.

“Marine mammal strandings can occur for a variety of reasons, and while it may be tempting to assist, it’s important to give these animals space and notify professionals,” lifeguards said in the release.

They encouraged anyone who encounters a sick or stranded marine mammal to call the center at 1-800-399-4253.

Torrance is about a 30-mile drive southwest from downtown Los Angeles.
