Early returns show who’s leading in 2022 Rock Hill city council elections
Voters in Rock Hill headed to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots for three city council seats.
Two of the three races were contested. Two incumbents held their seats and one race resulted in a runoff, which will be held on Feb. 22, unofficial results show.
In Ward 4, which covers the northwestern part of the city and has the highest population, incumbent John Black faced newcomer Maggie Schwietert.
In Ward 5, which includes East Main Street and the southern part of the city, incumbent Nikita Jackson ran against youth football coach Perry Sutton and newcomer Kenneth Harris.
And incumbent Jim Reno ran unopposed for Ward 6, which covers Winthrop University and runs up to the Catawba River.
Six candidates ran to represent the city’s Wards 4, 5 and 6. Council voted several months ago to delay the ward races, which originally were scheduled for October, until city officials could redraw its six voting districts. Redistricting is required every 10 years based on new census data.
Rock Hill’s election, which had 26,819 registered voters able to vote Tuesday, had about 7% voter turnout.
Polls closed at 7 p.m. and as of 9 p.m, 100% of precincts had reported. Official results won’t be available until the board of elections certifies the votes later this week.
