The Democratic challenger in the fifth district congressional race had a good start to the campaign, dollar-wise.

Fran Person, the Tega Cay Democrat running against incumbent Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-Indian Land, came out $13,000 ahead in fundraising for the first-quarter of the congressional campaign.

Filings with the Federal Election Commission show Person raised $177,757 in the first three months of the year, compared to $164127.21 for Mulvaney.

Of Mulvaney’s donations, $100,690 was raised from individual contributions, while $63,437.21 came from political action committees. Person’s take from personal contributions was $172,757, and $5,000 came from committees.

Mulvaney faces a challenge from Lake Wylie’s Ray Craig in the GOP primary for Congress on June 14. Person’s competition for the Democratic nomination, Rock Hill state Rep. John King, dropped out of the race earlier this month to instead run for re-election to his Statehouse seat.
