Navy chaplain in SC reassigned after complaints about views

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (AP) – A Navy chaplain in Goose Creek has been reassigned after his commanding officer received complaints about the minister’s counseling.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Lt. Cmdr. Wes Modder has been reassigned from the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command.

The Navy said Thursday that the Assemblies of God minister has been reassigned pending a hearing on whether he should be removed. Capt. Jon Fahs says Modder has disregarded his inclusive duty as a chaplain.

Modder’s attorney says the Navy wants to be “politically correct” despite the chaplain’s strict interpretation of scripture. Mike Berry said Modder is being singled out because he has expressed views against premarital sex and homosexuality.

Christianne Witten with the Navy Chaplain Corps says the Navy protects the rights of chaplains to practice their faith.
