Authorities: SC man fatally shot by driver of wrecked car

A man investigating an argument at the scene of a single-car wreck in Pelzer was fatally shot by the driver, authorities said.

Authorities were called Saturday night about a car that caught on fire after it struck a telephone pole, said Sgt. Jennings Autrey of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses said an argument began when the driver learned police had been called. A witness got a baseball bat, and the driver pulled out a firearm, Autrey said in a news release.

Another person who heard the noise drove an all-terrain vehicle to the scene and then tried to leave when he saw the firearm, Autrey said. The ATV driver was shot as he tried to drive away, authorities said.

Deputy coroner Kent Dill identified the driver as 62-year-old Terry Lee Lollis of Pelzer, who he said died during surgery early Sunday from injuries suffered Saturday night. An autopsy is planned for Monday, Dill said.

The car’s driver fled into woods and was arrested after a search by deputies and dogs, the news release said.

Autrey said the driver, Dmarrion Gilmore, was charged with attempted murder before Lollis died. He said he didn’t know when the charges would be upgraded. The website for the Greenville County Detention Center says Gilmore also is charged with being a fugitive from justice.
