Suspect in North Carolina turns himself in after 1-year-old found safe in stolen car
A 1-year-old boy who was left in the backseat of a car was found safe Monday after police in North Carolina say a man stole the vehicle with the toddler inside.
Michael R. Enochs, 54, of Archdale has since turned himself in to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, Fox8 reports. That news was also reported by WFMY and the Greensboro News& Record. Law enforcement officials were searching for Enochs in connection with kidnapping and motor vehicle theft, according to a statement released Monday.
Police issued an Amber Alert at about 2 a.m. Monday for Legend Masir Goodwine, who disappeared from a High Point parking lot — roughly 4 miles northwest from where the suspect reportedly lives in Archdale.
Goodwine was asleep in the backseat of a Gold Acura TL that was left running and unlocked on South Main Street in High Point on Sunday night, police said. The mother told officers she had gone inside a store to make a purchase.
Police said they obtained video that showed the suspect walk along Main Street, approach the car and drive away.
After issuing the Amber Alert, officials said they broadcast a “be-on-the-lookout” bulletin to officers within a 50-mile radius.
The suspect was eventually identified as Enochs, last seen wearing a black and white mesh hat, a light blue short sleeve T-shirt and blue jeans with dark shoes, police said.
Police said they found the Acura, with the child inside, in Davidson County, a nearly 30-minute drive southwest of High Point.
“After an extensive search and coverage from multiple media outlets, the Davidson County Sherriff’s Office received a call from two people who noticed a vehicle matching the description parked at a vacant residence,” police said.
High point investigators said the child was unharmed and returned him to his parents.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Knight with the High Point Police Department at 336-887-7864 or Crime Stoppers of High Point at 336-889-4000.
