These NC restaurants make Yelp’s best in country — just don’t expect lots of barbecue
Three North Carolina restaurants are among the best places to eat in the United States, new rankings show.
Charlotte favorite Banh Mi Brothers was named one of the top 100 eateries in the country, according to a list from the customer review website Yelp.
Also making the list were restaurants in Asheville and Greensboro, results released last week show.
Yelp says it made its 2020 restaurant rankings after analyzing last year’s reviews and ratings. The company ended up with a list it says is “quirky, interesting and unique.”
“Sure, you’ll see your fancy-schmancy spots and white tablecloth restaurants, but it’s also chock full of hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path joints,” Yelp said in a blog post.
North Carolina’s top restaurants reflected that variety, offering everything from Asian street food to elegant European-inspired dishes.
In Charlotte, Banh Mi Brothers specializes in twists on traditional Vietnamese recipes. One of the go-to dishes is the namesake banh mi sandwich, which consists of meat and veggies on toasted bread, The Charlotte Observer reported.
The menu even has a hint of barbecue — though probably not the kind you were expecting in North Carolina. Chinese barbecue is served in pork and vegan dishes, according to the restaurant’s website.
Yelp’s list also gives a nod to Sunny Point Café in Asheville. The family-owned restaurant offers Southern cuisine and breakfast staples, according to the review website.
And in Greensboro, downtown spot Chez Genèse also made its way into the latest rankings. The French-style cafe is also known for its early-morning meals, according to its Yelp page.

The No. 1 restaurant on the list is Shawarma Guys in San Diego, California.
Yelp’s rankings come weeks after the reservation service OpenTable released its best places for diners.
The Restaurant at Gideon Ridge in Blowing Rock made it onto that list. Also in the top 100 were Raleigh eateries Brewery Bhavana and Crawford and Son, The News & Observer Reported.
