Glider crashes off the Outer Banks, NC town says. Missing person’s body is found
A missing person was found dead after a glider crashed off the North Carolina coast, officials said.
The “ultra-light glider” had two people on board when it experienced a malfunction and hit the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday, Sept. 21, according to a town on the Outer Banks barrier islands.
“One individual was rescued and safely brought to shore,” the town of Southern Shores wrote in a news release.
Crews launched a search for the second passenger, whose body was later found, officials said.
The crash was reported at about 10 a.m. near Ocean Boulevard in Southern Shores, roughly 210 miles northeast of Raleigh.
The Federal Aviation Administration told McClatchy News in an email that it was helping the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate. The NTSB in a Twitter post shared that the crash involved an “experimental Northwing Design Apache Sport” aircraft.
