Deer breaks window and trashes office inside North Carolina high school, photo shows
An “unexpected visitor” showed up at a North Carolina school, making for a wild morning on campus.
A deer burst through a Rocky Mount High School window at around 7:15 a.m. before officials contained it in an office on Friday, Oct. 28, police told McClatchy News in an email.
A photo shared on Facebook shows the bloodied animal sitting near a shattered window and overturned furniture.
Daniel Terrill, a master officer with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, told McClatchy News in a phone interview that he arrived on the campus to find officials had pinned the animal under a desk.
“NC Wildlife successfully removed the deer from inside the school,” the Rocky Mount Police Department wrote in its post. “There were no injuries to students or staff.”
But the deer lost one of its antlers and was hurt during the ordeal. The animal was taken out of the school and later died, officers said.
Deer can be found in every North Carolina county, often living in forests, fields and residential neighborhoods. The animals can grow to be 200 pounds or more.
Mating season is around this time of year, which could help explain the school’s deer sighting. The animal may have seen its reflection in the glass of the window and thought it was a rival buck, Terrill said.
Rocky Mount is roughly 60 miles northeast of Raleigh.
