Father and son from North Carolina die in Virginia plane crash, cops say. ‘Devastated’
A father and son from North Carolina died in a fiery plane crash in Virginia, troopers said.
The 28-year-old pilot had his dad on board when the single-engine aircraft went down early June 7. The plane “crashed in a cornfield” and “caught fire,” according to Virginia State Police.
The two people on the plane died at the scene, police wrote in a news release.
Troopers identified the men as Logan Edward Woodworth and his 57-year-old father, Bruce Edward Woodworth. The two were from Wilmington, North Carolina, but used to live in the Northern Neck region of Virginia, along the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac and Rappahannock rivers.
Several loved ones took to social media to share their condolences, saying the crash left them “shocked” and “devastated.” The crash was reported about two weeks after Logan Woodworth posted that he flew across the United States, a trip that his dad called “epic.”
Now, the National Transportation Safety Board said an investigation is underway after the Van’s Aircraft RV-6 model plane that he was flying crashed “under unknown circumstances.” The crash was reported at about 10:30 a.m. in Colonial Beach, roughly 70 miles northeast of Richmond, Virginia.
The private plane had taken off from a “private airstrip” and was “destroyed in a post-crash fire,” according to preliminary information the NTSB shared with McClatchy News in an email, adding that an investigator was sent to the scene.
“The investigator will document the accident site, airplane, and gather witness statements and any surveillance video that may have captured any part of the accident flight,” federal officials wrote. “The investigator will also collect any flight track or radar data.”
As of June 8, the Federal Aviation Administration said it also was investigating the crash, which reportedly didn’t injure anyone on the ground.
