Hit-and-run crash kills 74-year-old in golf cart, NC cops say. Driver charged with DWI
A hit-and-run crash killed a 74-year-old woman riding in a golf cart in North Carolina, state troopers said.
Now, the man accused of slamming into the golf cart on a Robeson County road faces multiple charges, including driving while impaired. News outlets didn’t list attorney information for the man, identified as Kendrick Lamont Page of Lumberton.
Troopers said the golf cart was traveling on a road as a Chevrolet Cobalt was going in the same direction. The car “crossed the center line in a no-passing zone” and didn’t reduce its speed, an estimated 60 mph on a 45-mph road, according to First Sgt. S. B. Lewis of the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
As the golf cart turned into a driveway, the Chevrolet reportedly hit it and left the scene. The crash flipped the golf cart and knocked it into a ditch, resulting in the death of its passenger, officials said.
The passenger who died was identified as 74-year-old Annie Hunt Thomas of Lumberton.
The driver of the golf cart was hurt in the crash, which left Page uninjured. His Chevrolet became “disabled” about a quarter-mile from the crash site, and he was found inside the car, Lewis told McClatchy News in a phone interview.
Highway patrol was called to the crash just after 9 p.m. Monday, June 26. It was reported in the Lumberton area, roughly 95 miles south of Raleigh.
Lewis said the 39-year-old Chevrolet driver was charged with “felony hit-and-run, felony death by motor vehicle and driving while impaired” due to an alcohol-related cause. The results of a blood test are pending, and the driver is scheduled to appear in court July 11, records show.
