10-year-old boy dies after he’s pulled from motel pool on Outer Banks, NC town says

A 10-year-old boy died after he was pulled out of a motel pool near the North Carolina coast, officials said.

The child — a Chapel Hill resident — was visiting the Outer Banks barrier islands over the weekend when he went swimming in a pool. He later was found unresponsive in the water, the town of Nags Head wrote in an Aug. 7 news release and an email to McClatchy News.

Good Samaritans performed CPR on the boy before first responders tried to help him, with no success. The boy was rushed to The Outer Banks Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the town.

First responders reported being called to the pool at the Colonial Inn just after 11 a.m. Aug. 6. The property is near the beach in the popular summer vacation destination of Nags Head.

“The incident is under investigation, but charges are not expected currently,” officials wrote. “The town requests that the public keep the boy’s family and friends in their thoughts during this difficult time.”

The town told McClatchy News it didn’t know the child’s cause of death and said it isn’t releasing his name publicly.

Nags Head is roughly 200 miles east of Raleigh.
