North Carolina is home to many award-winning pubs, breweries and bars, but one spot has been named among the most legendary in the South.

Southern Living released a list of the top 25 legendary dive bars across the region, from dimly lit, sand-floored tiki spots to old-school piano bars. The list included Beaufort’s The Backstreet Pub. The top bars were picked by Southern Living editors.

“This funky bar resides in a century-old converted bakery, and you’ll find the vintage brick building quite cozy,” the report says. “Every patron, from fisherman to tourists, gets along just fine. As for entertainment, pick your poison: live music, board games, or something off its bookshelf. Grab an IPA (a house-favorite: Abundant Sunshine IPA by Waterman’s Brewing), and sink into a seat.”

The Backstreet Pub, located in Beaufort, has been a local hot spot for decades with performances from rock, funk, and blues bands every week.

“Being named one of the legendary dive bars of the South is a true honor,” owner Liz Kopf told The Charlotte Observer.

“A real dive bar focuses on the essence of what a bar should be — cold drinks (served up by interesting folks who want to know their customers), great music and a safe place for people from all walks of life to come together to talk, laugh and build community… I am so appreciative to be on this list and look forward to many more years of providing a quality ‘dive’ for folks to escape to,” Kopf said.

The Backstreet Pub was the only one in North Carolina to be featured on the list, along with three in South Carolina. You can find the full report of the most legendary dive bars in the South online at southernliving.com.
