A “string of tragedies” led a dog to a North Carolina shelter — and now, she needs another home.

Abby the “sweet” pup came to Burlington Animal Services after the sudden loss of her longtime owner. She was adopted again, but the situation didn’t work out, the shelter said June 3 in a Facebook post.

“Abby’s relationship with her siblings has deteriorated, so Abby is now in search of a family where she is either more compatible with the existing pets or one where she can be star of the show and only pet in the home,” the shelter wrote.

So in May, the shelter again sought a home for Abby, known as a calm mixed-breed dog with a love for cuddling. She also is “loyal,” loves car rides and believed to be at least 10 years old, according to an online adoption profile that was active as of early June 5.

“She is the perfect senior dog for anyone who likes to take things slow and just wants a sweet companion,” the animal organization wrote.

Abby first landed at the shelter in 2023, after her longtime owner died. The owner’s husband “fell on very hard times” and made the “difficult decision” to give her up, according to the shelter’s post and information spokesperson Laura Michel told McClatchy News in a phone interview.

“Abby was surrendered by her owner after he experienced a string of tragedies — his wife, who was Abby’s mom even before she married, suddenly passed away,” the shelter wrote. “With the loss of his wife, Abby’s owner also lost his home. Abby had long struggled with a skin issue, and with so many obstacles in his life, Abby’s owner was no longer able to care for her.”

Since her subsequent adoption didn’t work out, Abby is in need of a second chance. More information about the shelter’s adoption process can be found by emailing fosterpets@burlingtonnc.gov.

Burlington Animal Services is a roughly 25-mile drive east from Greensboro.
