This doughnut shop ranks No. 1 in North Carolina. It has ‘secret’ dough fans crave

A North Carolina doughnut shop adds a “secret” touch to its treats — and fans can’t get enough.

So much so, the bakery now ranks as the state’s No. 1 place to eat doughnuts.

Superior Bakery in Fayetteville earned the top honor from the review website Yelp, which studied five-star ratings left over time. The feedback came from users with “Elite” status, meaning they’re active participants on the website.

The results were published in late May, days before National Doughnut Day. Though this year’s occasion falls on June 7, Yelp users have shared their love for Superior Bakery’s treats across the seasons.

What makes the NC doughnut shop a fan favorite?

On Yelp, fans raved about the variety of doughnuts served warm and available in a variety of flavors. The shop in Fayetteville, a roughly 60-mile drive southwest from Raleigh, has offered cherry, chocolate and glazed doughnuts in recent days, according to its website and Facebook posts.

The business started in 1956, after John S. Poulos immigrated from Greece and bought an abandoned bakery.

Superior Bakery is still owned by the same family, and it ranked among the nation’s best places to get doughnuts in 2022 and 2023. This time around, Yelp praised the shop for offering a “complex taste you won’t get from an average donut.”

“There’s a reason this nearly 70-year-old shop has landed on consecutive Yelp best donut lists: the ‘secret’ dough,” Yelp wrote in its report. “Under second-generation owner-baker Nick Poulos, it’s made with a unique combination of butter, lemon, orange, and vanilla flavoring, plus cinnamon, and there’s vanilla and butter flavoring in the house-made glazes.”

For those not craving doughnuts, Superior Bakery also sells danishes, cakes and other desserts, online photos show.
