The laws differ when it comes to open carry versus concealed carry.

Openly carrying a gun means others can see the firearm in a visible holster. Concealed carrying applies to those who are hiding their gun from plain view while carrying it.

Here’s all you need to know about carry a handgun in North Carolina.

Who can openly carry a gun in NC without a permit?

Open carry is legal in North Carolina without a permit if you are at least 18 years old and have no felony convictions, according to Raleigh-based Manning Law Firm.

“Many places allow for open carry, but counties may regulate the display of firearms on public property and designate off-limit areas,” the firm says. “In addition, you may not open carry on private property or businesses that post ‘No Weapons’ signs.”

Open carry is also legal in vehicles, as long as it is visible and not readily accessible. That means firearms cannot be stored in unlocked glove boxes or underneath seats.

  • Be a U.S. citizen or have permanent residence in the state

  • Not be living with a mental illness

  • Complete a background check
