Amazon rolls out a new private-label brand & offers discounts on thousands of grocery items
Amazon recently slashed prices on thousands of grocery items for Prime members and launched a new low-cost brand that’s available to everyone.
These discounts are in addition to the Amazon Fresh price cuts that were rolled out over the summer. Amazon was one of several retailers, along with Walmart, Target, Aldi and Walgreens, that lowered prices on items across departments.
“We’re always looking to make grocery shopping easier, faster, and more affordable for our customers,” Claire Peters, the worldwide vice president of Amazon Fresh, said in a statement.
These discounts come as customers continue to face high inflation and high costs on many essentials, including groceries. Talk of the expense of food items has seeped into politics, with Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris making a proposed ban on corporate price gouging in the grocery industry a central issue in the campaign.
Which grocery items are on sale from Amazon Fresh?
With the new discounts, Amazon Prime members can get:
▪ Up to 50% off eight to 15 weekly rotating grocery items, such as produce, protein and pantry staples
▪ Up to 25% off more than 1,200 rotating grocery items and household favorites from top brands
▪ 10% off more than 1,700 items from Amazon private-label brands including Aplenty, Amazon Fresh, Amazon Kitchen, 365 by Whole Foods Market, Happy Belly and Amazon Saver
What is Amazon’s new private-label brand?
In addition to the price cuts on groceries, Amazon unveiled Amazon Saver, which the company described as a “no-frills brand that will help grocery budgets go further.”
Unlike the other price cuts, Amazon Saver products are available for all customers, not just Amazon Prime members.
Amazon Saver products include foods such as crackers, cookies, canned fruit, condiments and seasonings. More than 100 items will be added to the brand over time.
Most of these items cost $5 or less, and Prime members get an additional 10% off.
Target & Walmart launch low-cost store brands
This year, two national retailers — Target and Walmart — established new brands offering lower prices on essentials.
Items from Target’s dealworthy brand start at less than $1, with most costing less than $10.
Those low-cost products include apparel, accessories, beauty products, electronics and home items. Target will continue to add items including power cords, undergarments, socks, laundry detergent and dish soap to the dealworthy brand throughout early 2025.
Walmart’s bettergoods, the retailer’s largest private-brand food launch in decades, lists most items for under $5, with prices ranging from less than $2 to less than $15.
The 300 items that comprise bettergoods span frozen, dairy, snacks, beverages, pasta, soups, coffee, chocolate and other kinds of foods. They mostly fall under three categories: plant-based options; “made without” products that cater to certain diets (like gluten free) or don’t contain ingredients such as added sugars or artificial flavors; and “culinary experiences” that highlight “innovative recipes, elevated ingredients and food-trend forward offerings.”
“Unlike many private brands that provide direct alternatives to national brand offerings at a lower price, many bettergoods items are totally unique to Walmart, introducing customers to new and exciting flavors and concepts,” according to a press release announcing the brand launch.
