A blind cat with “dog-like” traits needed a new home — then came the perfect match.
Domino, who lost both of his eyes after Hurricane Helene impacted his previous North Carolina shelter, is going home with a family who’s familiar with his needs.
“The couple who adopted him has two other cats, one of which is 80% blind in one eye and without the other eye (so more or less without vision),” Malinda Massey, marketing manager for the Forsyth Humane Society, told McClatchy News in a Nov. 20 email. “They were so excited to adopt Domino and bring him into their family. We couldn’t have asked for a better forever home for him, given their experience with cats who have limited/no vision and their love for Domino already!”
The heartwarming adoption came after Domino had “been through so much,” the shelter wrote on Facebook. He was living at a shelter in Western North Carolina when Hurricane Helene devastated the region with flooding and wind damage in late September.
The humane society, located in Winston-Salem, said it took in Domino after his previous shelter lost resources in the storm. When he got to the humane society, one of his eyes showed signs of an infection and had to be removed.
“Our team decided to remove the second eye as a preventative measure because of an existing ulcer in it that could potentially turn into cancer,” Massey wrote, adding that he likely had limited vision and discomfort before the two surgeries.
As he waited for a home, Domino became known as a “dog-like” cat who enjoyed staying close to people. But he was particular when it came to affection, preferring to approach people rather than being picked up.
“Domino is brave and social, which help him to get to know his people and his surroundings quite well,” his former foster family told the humane society. “He uses his whiskers to find his way.”
After Domino spent time in foster care, the shelter shared the good news that he was adopted. A photo shows the cat spending time with his new owners as he starts his next chapter.
“We were thrilled to see him find such a good match,” the shelter wrote. “The adoption counselor who worked with them was really over the moon.”
