A man armed with an ax is accused of causing the death of his mom who tried to intervene in a fight between him and two bail bondsmen, North Carolina law enforcement said.

Caleb Jones, 46, is now charged with second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and two counts of assault inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, according to a Dec. 30 news release from the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office.

McClatchy News reached out to Jones’ public defender for comment Dec. 31 but did not immediately receive a response.

On Dec. 16, two bail bondsmen were trying to get Jones to come with them, but he was refusing, deputies said.

His mom, Linda Hall, came over to try to get him to go with them, but the mother and son got into a physical altercation and Hall fell, leaving her with a fatal injury, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told McClatchy News on Dec. 31.

Jones attacked the bondsmen with an ax, hitting one in the back of the head, according to the spokesperson. The bondsman got staples and survived the injury.

The other bondsman called 911 while Jones barricaded himself in the home until he was eventually taken into custody without incident, deputies said.

The injured victims were taken to a hospital, where 73-year-old Hall died, officials said.

In her obituary, Hall was described as a “loving” woman who “lived life to the fullest” and enjoyed spending time with family, friends and her dog.

“She loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious treats and canning jellies, fruits and all sorts of vegetables for her friends and family,” according to her obituary.

Jones was served with warrants for his arrest once he was released from the hospital, the sheriff’s office spokesperson told McClatchy News.

Hoke County is part of the Fayetteville metropolitan area.
