Three kids fall through frozen pond ice, and one is in critical condition, NC cops say
Three children fell into a frozen pond, leaving one of the kids in critical condition, North Carolina officials said.
The children were playing on the ice when the tragedy unfolded at about 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, according to Winston-Salem first responders.
First responders and family members rescued two of the kids, who were taken to a hospital to be evaluated. The third child later was pulled from the water in “critical life threatening condition,” police and fire officials wrote in a news release.
“This is a heart breaking incident and our thoughts are with the family during this time,” first responders wrote.
As of early Jan. 17, officials hadn’t shared the identities of the children. An investigation is ongoing, Tabetha Childress, public information officer for the Winston-Salem Fire Department, told McClatchy News via email.
The rescue was reported on a day when temperatures in the area hovered between 50 and 18 degrees. A cold front is expected to hit the region early next week, bringing temperatures in the teens and 20s, according to the National Weather Service.
“We urge the public to exercise extreme caution around frozen bodies of water,” officials wrote. “Ice may appear stable but can be dangerously thin and unpredictable.”
