A trucker accused of shooting another trucker in North Carolina was killed during a shootout with deputies at a Virginia truck stop, according to investigators.

Two deputies were wounded in the gunfight, which occurred in Carroll County, Virginia, just north of the state line, the Greensboro Police Department said in a March 29 news release.

The suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Edmond Johnson of Louisiana, police said.

He was fatally shot Friday, March 28, in the parking lot of a Love’s Travel Stop off Interstate 77 in Lamsburg, Virginia, officials said. Lamsburg is about a 75-mile drive northwest from Greensboro.

“The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Love’s ... after receiving information that a suspect who was wanted in Maryland, and also reportedly involved in a shooting in Greensboro, North Carolina, was at the truck stop,” the Virginia State Police said in a news release.

“The suspect was located in a tractor-trailer truck. When he eventually exited the tractor-trailer, he exchanged gunfire with the deputies. During the gunfire exchange, two deputies were shot as well as the suspect.”

Johnson died at the scene. The two deputies were taken to hospitals and details of their condition have not been released.

Greensboro police say Johnson was the suspect in a shooting that occurred around 1:45 p.m. on Friday, March 28, on Interstate 85., near mile marker 131

“The incident involved drivers of two tractor trailers. One victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” police said.

The identity of the wounded driver and a motive in the shooting have not been released.

A Geographic Positioning Device helped lead deputies to the Johnson’s truck at the Love’s in Virginia, officials said.

Greensboro is about a 90-mile drive northeast from Charlotte.
