Bystanders find tourist from New York dead off Outer Banks beach, NC park says
A New York man visiting North Carolina was found dead in waters off the Outer Banks, according to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
The discovery was made just before 3 p.m. Monday, June 30, near Frisco, about a 250-mile drive southeast from Raleigh.
“A bystander observed the male face down in the water. Bystanders rescued the male (and) brought him to shore,” the park reported.
“Resuscitation measures were attempted on the beach near Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Ramp 49 but were unsuccessful.”
The identity of the 67-year-old man was not released. He was visiting the barrier islands from Nanuet, New York, about a 520-mile drive north from Frisco, officials said.
Investigators believe he was swimming without a flotation device when he died.
A cause of death has not been revealed.
Fast-moving rip currents frequently pull swimmers away from beaches to their death, but “rip currents were not observed in the area surrounding this incident,” officials said.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore encompasses about 70 miles of shifting barrier islands along the turbulent spot where the northbound Gulf Stream and southbound Labrador Current collide, experts say.
