Craving biscuits for lunch or dinner? If you live almost anywhere in North Carolina, some of the best in the South can be found in the state.

Southern Living has named Biscuit Head in Asheville among the 12 top biscuit eateries across the region.

Founded in 2013, the restaurant has described itself as a place “to share a love of southern cooking and a commitment to local foods,” according to a statement on the Biscuit Head website.

Carolyn Roy, who has owned Biscuit Head since its inception, says the breaded treats are a “delicious blank canvas and the perfect vehicle for exploring and marrying flavors.

“The possibilities and combinations are endless, which makes us love them even more,” she said on the restaurant website.

Open daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Biscuit Head — with locations in Asheville and Greenville, South Carolina — is a favorite of locals and visitors and is often packed with customers.

Whether you’re craving traditional biscuits with five different gravy options, a Pulled Pork Biscuit, Mimosa Fried Chicken Biscuit or even Biscuit Donuts, there are items to keep you coming back for more.

Customers can also customize their biscuit dishes with familiar breakfast sides like bacon, eggs, home fries and fried green tomatoes. The menu also offers vegetarian sausage, fried chicken or a vegan biscuit.

You can even try homemade jam from the Biscuit Head jam bar, which churns out seven different kinds, according to Fern Coomer, a general manager at the Biscuit Head West Asheville location.

Why Biscuit Head is a favorite

Southern Living said Biscuit Head “takes an unpretentious yet detail-oriented approach to biscuit culture” in its article published on Sunday, June 22.

“Their cathead biscuits are fluffy and perfectly baked and made even better when paired with their creative gravy offerings and a delicious selection of jams from their jam bar.”

Coomer said the traditional southern-style biscuit has drawn many to the restaurant over the years.

“I think people are drawn to them because we have a really good recipe,” she told The Charlotte Observer. We offer different combinations with biscuits, and it’s just really good traditional southern biscuits.”

The Southern Living recognition is not the first time Biscuit Head has been acknowledged.

The restaurant chain earned a Critics’ Choice Award at the International Biscuit Festival in 2014, was named among the five best biscuits in the nation by Food & Wine in 2014, and recognized for their Buttermilk Biscuit Mix by Garden & Gun at the Made in the South Award.
