Mom and child walking to school injured during hit-and-run collision, NC cops say

A mother and child walking to school during morning rush hour were hit by a motorist who left before police arrived, according to investigators in North Carolina.

Their injuries were not life-threatening, police said in a news release.

It happened around 7:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Interstate 40 exit ramp near Mable Avenue in Burlington, police said.

“The investigation revealed that the juvenile and their mother were traveling north on foot along Maple Avenue toward a nearby school. As they attempted to cross the I-40 westbound on-ramp, a white Dodge Ram ... struck both,” police said.

“The truck had a green signal when turning and initially stopped to check the two pedestrians, but ultimately left the scene.”

Identities of the mother and child and details of their injuries were not released.

An investigation identified the driver was 51-year-old Jose Lopez of Graham, officials said. “Lopez was located and has since been charged with (misdemeanor) hit-and-run,” police said.

Details of the injuries suffered b y the mother and child were not released.

Burlington is about a 40-mile drive northwest from Durham.
