Two teachers suffer facial injuries while struggling with student, NC sheriff says
A brawl involving a student and staff members at Parkwood High near Monroe ended with two teachers hurt, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
The “assault” happened just after 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, and quickly spawned social media rumors of a campus stabbing, the sheriff’s office said.
“The sheriff’s office has been made aware of a rumor circulating that a teacher was injured in an assault involving a stabbing. ... We want to be clear that there is no factual basis for this claim,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.
“Based on the initial investigation, it was determined that the student attacked a teacher, causing multiple cuts and marks to the teacher’s face. A second teacher who attempted to intervene also sustained injuries to her head and face.”
A School Resource Officer “intervened and was able to take a female student into custody,” officials said.
Investigators have not released details of what prompted the altercation.
The sheriff’s office and the Union County Public Schools are conducting parallel investigations, officials said. Charges have not been filed.
Union County Schools officials told The Charlotte Observer they did not have “additional information to share” on the condition of the teachers.
Parkwood High has nearly 1,100 Students in grades 9-12, according to Greatschools.org. The school is about a 30-mile drive southeast from uptown Charlotte.
