An ambulance ride turned into a deadly crime spree after the patient hijacked the vehicle, crashed it into a car, then killed the other driver, according to investigators in southeastern North Carolina.

It happened Saturday, Dec. 13, in Maxton, and the accused shooter is in custody, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Maxton is about a 105-mile drive southwest from Raleigh.

“Robeson County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was dispatched to Chavis Rd ... in reference to a medical emergency. While en route to the hospital, the person being transported, Cheyenne D. Woods, 36, of Red Springs, brandished a firearm at two EMS workers and fled in the EMS ambulance,” the sheriff’s office said.

“After taking the EMS vehicle, Woods was involved in a collision with another vehicle. Following the crash, Woods exited the ambulance, approached the other vehicle, and shot Marie Locklear, 74, of Red Springs.”

Locklear died after being taken to a hospital. A motive in her killing has not been released.

Woods was arrested not far from the crash scene and has been charged with:

  • First degree murder
  • Eight counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property
  • Robbery with a dangerous weapon
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon,
  • Possession of a stolen fire arm
  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
  • Malicious conduct by a prisoner by throwing, emitting or projecting bodily fluids
  • Second-degree kidnapping

Woods is being held without bond at the Robeson County Detention Center, officials said. He has a prior murder conviction, the sheriff’s office said.

“The facts of this case are deeply disturbing,” Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said in a news release. “The suspect was armed, requested medical assistance, stole an ambulance, crashed it, and then opened fire on an innocent elderly woman without provocation.”
