A U.S. Marine turned Charlotte police officer died suddenly at a Gaston County hospital on Sunday, leaving behind four children, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Officer Michael Miles was 39 and a 13-year veteran with the department.

He joined CMPD in 2012 and spent the bulk of his career patrolling west Charlotte’s Freedom Division, officials said.

“Beyond his patrol duties, Officer Miles was a Patrol Training Officer, where he spent years mentoring and shaping the next generation of officers,” CMPD said. “Before his time with CMPD, Officer Miles proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps.”

Miles’ death was due to a “medical complication,” the CMPD Retirees Association reported in a Facebook post. A specific cause was not released.

“Michael leaves behind his significant other, Hannah Kelly, who works in Property & Evidence Management Division,” the retirees association said.

The couple have four children: Gavin, 16, Graclie, 14, Kayliann, 10, and Nolan, 8, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up to support the family. The campaign had raised $30,000 as of Jan. 6.

“Michael served his community with honor, compassion, and dedication, and his legacy will continue through the lives he touched both personally and professionally,” the campaign says.

“His presence made a lasting difference in the lives of many.”
