Another member of Durham’s 83 Babies rap group was shot this week, marking the second shooting involving the former group this month, according to social media posts and other sources.

Tyrese “Setitoff83” Taylor, 25, was found shot around 6:30 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of Carlie C’s on Wake Forest Highway, according to those sources.

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office declined to name the person but said he suffered a non-life-threatening injury and is in the hospital. The investigation is ongoing.

2 found fatally shot in car March 13

Just before midnight March 13, police found former 83 Babies member Tevin Burney, 23, and Jarrett Godfrey, 26, fatally shot in a car near North Roxboro Street.

A woman was also shot, but her injuries weren’t life-threatening, police said in a news release.

Burney became widely known as Young Boss Tevo, or YBT, as a member of the group, which was associated with the Eight Trey Gangster Crips, the violent gang with a set or subgroup that frequented the Braggtown area in northern Durham over the years, according to court documents.

Rap group derailed after killing

In 2019, the rap group’s star was rising after signing with Rich the Kid’s label, part of Atlantic Records.

But it didn’t last.

That August, member Antonio “Lil Tony” Davenport shot and killed 9-year-old Z’Yon Person, mistaking an SUV full of children for rival gang members, according to court testimony. A jury sentenced him to life in federal prison in 2022.

After the killing, the group was essentially blackballed in the entertainment industry, Burney said in a 2021 interview shared by DGB Media on YouTube. The doors stopped opening for them, he said.

“Because like if you’re right there at the door, there shouldn’t be no reason that you are going backwards, you should be standing there or going through that door,” he said.

Instead, he said, they remained behind the door, trying to kick it in.

Life in Durham after prison

In an April 2025 interview with DGB Media, Taylor described returning to the area after two years in prison.

In 2022, Taylor was convicted in Wake County of attempting to assault a law enforcement officer with a firearm and possessing a gun as a felon. He left prison in 2023, but returned for a few months after violating his probation by traveling to Miami to attend an event with celebrities, he said in the interview.

While he was incarcerated, his daughter went from crawling to walking, he said. His grandmother and his best friend died, he said.

When asked about coming back to Durham, Taylor said the Bull City felt unchanged in the 2025 interview.

“The most love and the most hate at the same time. And it be crazy,” he said.

He was also asked about his song “No More 83 Babies,” which he released in 2024.

“Like I said on the song, you know, it was fun. Now it is done. I took a lot of Ls [losses] for others, they held me back a lot,” he said.
