An odd photo circulating on social media shows a North Carolina firefighter stuffed head first into a drainage pipe, and it is neither AI nor a gag.

The very awkward moment happened 8:45 a.m. Thursday, April 9, during an equally awkward rescue in the Sophia community of Randolph County.

Sunny appeared to be enjoying all the attention as a crew worked more than an hour to get him out of the drainage pipe.

“This morning, crews from Westside Fire & Rescue responded to an unusual call in the 2300 block of Lake Lucas Rd,” the department wrote in a Facebook post. “Firefighters found distraught residents whose dog, Sunny, had slipped into a drain pipe and was unable to get out.”

Sunny had been missing for hours when someone realized he was entombed under a driveway. How he ended up in such a predicament remains a mystery.

“This was an elder dog that lacked the mobility to come out under its own power,” the fire department said.

A rescue operation was mounted with firefighters working alongside Randolph County Animal Services. It was during that hour-long affair that one rescuer ended up head-first in a drainage pipe full of rotting plant material and trash.

Sunny was lifted from the pipe “using specialized rescue tools and a careful approach,” officials said.

He emerged muddy and appeared to be thrilled at all the attention, photos show.

“Sunny was ... reunited with the family, who were visibly relieved and deeply grateful,” the fire department said. “Whether it’s people or pets, Westside Fire & Rescue is always ready to help.”

Sophia is about a 90-mile drive northeast from uptown Charlotte.
