Video shows angler was surrounded by ‘shark feeding frenzy’ off NC’s Outer Banks
A man fishing off North Carolina’s Outer Banks found himself in a frightening predicament when a “shark feeding frenzy” erupted around him, video shows.
It happened Monday near Cape Point, and pro surfer Brett Barley can be heard screaming “Get me out of here” as some sharks appeared to target his watercraft. The predators were feasting on menhaden, he said.
“A massive shark feeding frenzy engulfed my Sea-Doo while I was out fishing today!” Barley wrote in an April 13 social media post.
“And on top of the hundreds of sharks eating bait over a 4-acre wide area, a big school of red drum blitzed in to join the party! Sharks and drum coexisting to devour menhaden … Would not recommend being in the middle of a ball of spinner sharks though. ... I’m very fortunate one didn’t sky right into me.”
One of the predators can be heard colliding with his Sea-Doo, while others could be seen jumping across the surface, the video shows.
Barley identified the species as spinner sharks, which grow to 10 feet and have a “habit of making spinning leaps out of the water,” NC Sea Grant reports.
The video had been viewed more than 200,000 times on Facebook as of April 15 and had 2,000 reactions and comments. Some called it “horrifying.”
“In all my years of beach life, I have never seen anything like this before! Talk about wild!” one commenter wrote.
“This is crazy, awesome and totally nuts!! Glad you caught it on camera and came out unscathed! I would have brought out the Minnie Mouse voice,” another said.
Cape Point is about a 240-mile drive southeast from downtown Raleigh.
