A 38-year-old Lugoff man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted his pregnant wife when she refused to buy him the amount of beer he requested.

Patrick Donahue Tolbert has been charged with criminal domestic violence in connection with the incident, according to Kershaw County Detention Center’s records.

An incident report filed with the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office said on March 26, deputies arrived at an apartment located at 149 Willow Creek Blvd. in Lugoff in reference to a victim being assaulted by her husband. The report said the victim was assaulted by Tolbert whom she has been married to for two years and is pregnant with his child.

When deputies arrived they spoke with the victim who said Tolbert had been drinking all day and “threatened force against her if she didn’t go buy him an 18-pack of beer.”

The victim said to deputies that she told her husband she would only buy him a 12-pack of beer to which Tolbert responded, “I’ll show you better than I can tell you,” the report said.

The victim went to the store and bought the beer, but when she returned to the residence her husband was waiting for her outside of the residence with a tool commonly used in logging. When the victim stopped the car, Tolbert began striking the front of the vehicle with the tool causing damage.

The report said when the victim began to get out of the vehicle, Tolbert grabbed her by the wrist and jerked her from the vehicle. The victim was able to flee to a neighbor’s residence and call 911. Tolbert then fled from the area on foot.

After searching nearby areas for Tolbert, deputies left the residence but were called back an hour later after he returned and allegedly began causing more trouble with his wife, the report said.

Tolbert fled the area a second time before deputies arrived, but this time they stayed near the residence on foot expecting him to return. When Tolbert returned to the residence, deputies located him, and he tried to flee a third time but was apprehended.

The report said after Tolbert was detained, he acknowledged he was going to jail and told deputies the situation with his wife got out of hand after “she didn’t get what I asked,” but claims he didn’t assault her in anyway.
