Study: South Carolina among the least-safe states

A new study by personal finance website WalletHub, shows South Carolina the second worst on the list of 2015’s safest states in which to live.

Since June is National Safety Month, WalletHub analyzed the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 20 metrics, such as the number of assaults per 100,000 residents, the number of fatal occupational injuries per 100,000 employees, and the percentage of the population lacking health insurance coverage.

Here’s a quick list of South Carolina's ranking in some of these areas (the higher the number, the worse the ranking):

• 45th – Murders and non-negligent manslaughters per 100,000 residents

• 47th – Assaults per 100,000 residents

• 30th – Fatal occupational injuries per 100,000 employees

• 48th – Fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel

• 32nd – Unemployment rate

• 39th – Sex offenders per 100,000 residents

• 41st – Share of the population with no health insurance

• 45th – Pedestrian fatality rate per 100,000 residents (also includes pedacyclists)

• 48th – Thefts per 100,000 residents
