Motorcycle rider killed in crash during race, South Carolina coroner says
A Georgia man died Sunday after crashing in a motorcycle race in South Carolina, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said.
Emergency calls were made before 10 a.m. about a motorcycle rider wrecking in a Sandlapper Enduro Race in Salley, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release. That’s about 30 miles south of Columbia.
First responders discovered the body John T. Nutt in a wooded area near the race course, off Altees Corbett Road, according to the release.
The 56-year-old Albany, Georgia man died at the scene, Ables said.
Nutt was wearing a helmet and other protective clothing when he ran the motorcycle off a trail and was thrown from the bike, according to the release.
The coroner’s office said there is no sign that Nutt hit a tree, and information on what caused him to veer off course was not available.
An autopsy has been scheduled in Newberry to determine his cause of death, Ables said.
The motorcycle race was put on by the Columbia Enduro Riders, according to US Dual Sports.
Enduro racing is a timed race event composed of five to six sections, and riders cover 60 to 80 miles, Aiken County officials said.
The race in Salley began Saturday and was scheduled to run until 2 p.m. Sunday.
